The Veds are not just hymns and prayers addressed to various gods. They contain interesting stories, told simply. Also, several stories have grown up around the Veds in course of time, and have been included in the Mahabharat and the Purans. The story of Indra and Dadhichi, for example, appears in the Rig Ved but can be found in fuller form in several Purans. Ved Vyas, the sage who systemised the Veds, appears in the Mahabharat both as its writer and a character in it. Characters like Yajnavalkya and Aruni appear in the Veds as well as the Upanishads.
