THE PURSUIT OF NATIONAL INTERESTS THROUGH NEUTRALISM: INDIA'S FOREIGN POLICY IN THE NEHRU ERA is a study of the LEITMOTIF of India's Foreign Policy of neutralism during the Nehru era. This study, unlike previous ones on the same subject, seeks mainly to relate India's neutralism to national intersts as defined by her policy- makers.

The study falls into seven chapters. Special features of evolutionary neutralism of India, preoccupation with national interests, pragmatic nature of India's foreign policy have all been analysed and brought to focus. While India's policy has not been shown to be without success, she still failed to realise her objectives in certain areas. But did such failures stem from her non-alignment-cum- neutralism?

Quite a few books, as for example by Cecil Crabb, Jansen, Karunakaran, Kundra, Paul Power, Brecher and others went before the present study. But Dr. Bhattacharya shows how neutralism has served her very well Indeed. Content-analysis of the speeches of Nehru and other leading policy-makers gives a lot of support to author's thesis and removes a big lacuna in the area of study which had been persisting.

Dr. Sauri P. Bhattacharya. a native of India (b. September 1, 1931 at Jhapordah, near Calcutta), holds academic degrees of B. A. from the Presidency College, Calcutta, Master of Arts in Political Science from the University of Calcutta, and M. A.. PH. D. from the University of Missouri. Columbia, Mo.. USA. He began his teaching career in 1960 as Lecturer in Political Science at Khargpur and Midnapore Colleges in W. Bengal; then, as Instructor, taught political Science (American Government and International Relations), Bengali and Journalism at the University of Missouri; and now is a Professor of Political Science at Southeastern Oklahoma State University, Durant, Okla., USA. In addition, he has had experience as a journalist, having been a Correspondent (part-time) of All India Radio stationed at Midnapore. Dr. Bhattacharya has written nine articles in areas of Comparative Government, International Relations and Journalism, all of which have been published in international journals (Indian and foreign). The current work Is his first major venture as a scholar.

Dr. Bhattacharya Is married and lives in the United States with his wife, Anima, who also holds a Ph. D. in Philosophy from the University of Missouri.
