To be effective as an instrument of Social Change the Educational enterprise should rest on a sound theory of learning and teaching. Educational psychologists have probed quite deep into the entire phenomenon of learning. This has resulted into the development of some sound theories of learning. Further, the advances in technology have enriched the learning process through what is now known as Technology of Education. Educational researchers are now concerned with the problem of uncovering and analyzing the phenomenon of teaching. The Centre of Advanced Study in Education, M. S. University of Baroda has been working in this area for the last three years. A small group of young researchers have been devoting their full time and energy to research in this area. The Centre has been organising national seminars in the area of teaching and teacher behaviour for the last three years. Dr. Shib K. Mitra, Professor of Psychology, Calcutta University, was selected by the University Grants Commission to deliver national lectures during the year 1971-72. He gave three lectures under the auspices of the Centre of Advanced Study in Education, Baroda on Psychology of Teaching" in January 1972. The Centre is happy to publish his lectures for the benefit of educational psychologists and teacher educators and especially those who are planning to undertake studies in the area of teaching. The Centre is specially thankful to Professor S. K. Mitra for giving permission to publish these lectures.
