We feel great pleasure in presenting the proceedings of the 0th Session of the Indian Art History Congress to the scholarly World organized under the auspices of the Tezpur University, Assam on 28-29th December 2001 at Tezpur. The general theme of this Congress was 'Medieval Art of India from 1000 A. D. to 1700 A. D.

The Congress was inaugurated by Mr. C. D. Tripathi, I. A. S., Ex. Secretary to the President of India and Fellow, Indian Institute of advanced Studies, Shimal on 28th December, 2001. The noted art historian Prof. R. N. Mishra, Former Head of Department of Ancient Indian History, Jiwaji University, Gwalior and the General President of the Session presented the Presidential address on this occasion. Mr. C. K. Das, Chairman, Board of Revenue, Govt. of Assam was Guest of Honour. Dr. M. L. Nigam, Chairman, Indian Art History Congress released the Souvenir published on this occasion. Dr. R. C. Sharma, Former Director General, National Museum delivered the Prof. K. D. Bajpai Memorial Lecture during the congress on the theme entitled 'Fauna in Mathura Art'. At the outset Prof. P. Bhattacharya, vice-chancellor, Tezpur University welcomed the Guests and participants. Dr. R. D. Choudhury, General Secretary of the I. A. H. C. also addressed the inaugural session. Dr. Sunil Kumar Dutta, Local Secretary, Organising committee, Tezpur University proposed a vote of thanks.

We also take this opportunity to thank the Presidents of the various sessions namely Dr. S. S. Biswas, Prof. Birendranath Datta, Mr. K. N. Dikshit, Dr. B. L. Nagarach and Dr. S. K. Chakravarty, who took the responsibility of running the session smoothly.

The content of this proceeding are of considerable importance. We sincerely hope that this volume will be useful to scholars of Indology in general and art historian in particular.

Out heart-felt gratitude are due to the contributors whose learned papers have enriched the present volume. We must express our gratefulness to Dr. M. L. Nigam, Chairman and Dr. R. D. Choudhary, General Secretary of Indian Art History Congress for their immense interest in the publication of this volume.
