Preface The subject matter of this little book was delivered in the form of two special lectures at the Mysore University on the 13th & 14th September 1977. At a time when the problem of unemployment and under-employment are assuming union’s dimensions, and when the exodus of the people from the Rural to Urban areas has been on the high side, there is no other go except to process the raw material available in the rural areas into finished goods and give gainful occupation to the rural folk. A time has come when agriculture alone cannot feed the agricultural labourers and others, even for the half the year. Inspite of planning for over 25 years, it is unfortunate that conditions in the rural areas leave much to be desired. An attempt has been made in these lectures to deal with the significance of the problem, introduction of appropriate technology, assessment of the work of the various Boards meant for development of small industries, assessment of the rural industries projects and giving a rough plan of the lines on which rural industrialization is to be attempted.
