Pratap has been recognised as The Incarnation of Free-dom' The noble spirit he inherited from his ancestors sustained him through thick and thin of his life. His unique example of combating the mighty Mughals, with a meager man-power is rare in the history of the world. No one can be compared with the invincible Rana who always held his head high amidst many vicissitudes of life. Pratap, "The embodiment of the elemental spirit of India' preferred deserts and jungles to pomp and palaces, breads of grass to rich dishes and beds of straw to vel- vet cushions, in order to maintain the high traditions and cul- ture of his race. For centuries, the Ranas of Mewar fought against the foreigners who invaded their country but never submitted to them. Even their ladies were not behind, in the display of inordinate courage and marvelous sacrifice. To preserve their honor, they performed the terrible rites of Johur self-immolation into blazing fire, accompanied by thousands of women.
Mewar is the land where nature has played an impor- tant part in shaping its history which is so rich and glorious. It has immensely helped its people to sustain long and continual struggles for their freedom. Rajasthan has been famous for its heroes and heroines, but in the galaxy of them, Pratap holds a very high and unrivalled position. It would not be an exaggera- tion if we place him at the top of the world freedom-fighters.
I am glad to write a few words as a foreword to this book on Maharana Pratap by Shri Balwant Singh Mehta and Shri Jodh Singh Mehta. Pratap has a high place not only in the history of Rajasthan but of India as well. Master of a State with reduced territory and its capital in enemy's hands, Pratap put up a heroic and continual fight against Akbar, the most powerful monarch of the 16th century. Pratap suffered defeats but such as were more glorious than victories. He preferred to suffer hardship and tribulations but never bowed his head before a foreigner. Reverses did not daunt him. Troubles did not unnerved him. He died as an independent ruler within a vast and mighty empire. His name is an inspiration to all those who love free- dom. This book gives the salient features of his heroic life and will be useful for the general readers and tourists.
