The former Baroda State Government had initiated two series of Memorial Lectures, viz. The Maharaja Sayajirao III Golden Jubilee Memorial Lectures, and The Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad Honorarium Lectures. On the merger of the Baroda State with the Bombay State, the Government of Bombay entrusted the management of the lectures to the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda and sanctioned two special recurring grants: one of Rs. 1,000/- for The Maharaja Sayajirao III Golden Jubilee Memorial Lectures and the other of Rs. 5,000/- for The Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad Honorarium Lectures'. As the special recurring grants were discontinued, the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda closed the abovementioned two series of lectures, and started a new series entitled as 'The Maharaja Sayajirao Memorial Lecture Series'.
Under the new series, Professor J. B. S. Haldane, F.R.S., eminent Biologist and Statistician, was invited to deliver the lectures. He delivered two lectures on Physiological Variation and Evolution on 16-1-1959 in the Faculty of Science.
These lectures will be found very useful by the scholars and students of the subject.
