There is something sad about a work which was intended as a volume of felicitation but must now appear as a volume in memoriam.
Life, however, is more ancient than death by at least one generation and as long as a person is known to have lived, the person is alive, for it is in our thoughts that people are alive for us when they are not with us. I hope this volume will serve to keep alive the memory of Professor D.P. Singhal and in that memory he too will live again. Death may not respect individuals but time is the sentinel of scholars. In the longevity of their memory they survive the brevity of their temporal existence.
I thank the scholars who have contributed to this volume for making us feel that Professor Singhal is still among us in spirit.
