Book Description
Preface
The present volume consists of papers read at the Seminar on "The Peasantry through the Ages in Western India, with special reference to Rajasthan" held on Nov. 10, 11, 1986, under the auspices of the Centre for Rajasthan Studies, University of Rajas-than, Jaipur. The papers cover diverse aspects, problems, and Developments related to or affecting the peasantry and peasant - - It is hoped that the scholars will find these papers essentially regional context.

The Proceedings of a Seminar rarely cover a theme comprehensively; they cover a wide spectrum but comprehensively deal with select problems only. This characteristic feature of the Seminar proceedings will be noticed in the present volume also. However, the papers illuminate a much larger area of study than a casual impression of their titles is likely to convey.

A paper on the peasantry in Ancient Rajasthan has been added, regretfully though not at the proper place, to give continuity to the theme, in fact more to fill in a gap as no paper was read dealing with agriculture and peasantry during the ancient period of Rajasthan. It may provoke other scholars to deal with this theme, which has been generally ignored in the books dealing with Rajasthan, more comprehensively.

Our grateful thanks are due to the then Vice-Chancellor, Prof. R.P. Agarwal for kindly inaugurating the Seminar and to the delegates for their learned papers and for taking the trouble to come to Jaipur to grace the Seminar. Thanks are also due to the members of the Staff of the Department of History and Indian Culture who took part in the discussions in the Seminar. The Centre will always remain indebted to Prof. T. K. N. Unnithan, who revived the Centre in 1984 when he was the Vice-Chancellor, after it had remained non-functional due to lack of any financial support from the Government, or any other organisation.
