The volume includes research papers on different aspects of the history and culture of Pataliputra by eminent scholars on the subject. The research papers deal with the geographical settings of Pataliputra, its origin and growth, antiquarian remains, descriptions in literary accounts, contribution to art and architecture as well as the circumstances leading to its decline and desertion. Of particular interest are the inclusions of two exploration and excavation reports of L.A. Waddell's "Discovery of the Exact Site of Asoka's Classical Capital Pataliputra (The Palibothra of the Greeks) and Description of the Superficial Remains" and Babu Purna Chandra Mukerjee's" A report on the Excavation on the Ancient Sites of Patliputra in 1896-97." The volume would be extremely useful source material for students, researchers and public at large for understanding the history of Pataliputra.
