In present times taste for poetry and its appreciation are diminishing for a variety of reasons, one of them being addiction to television. When I am on a holiday in the countryside my constant companion is a book of poems, and to me, Palgrave's anthology is unsurpassable.
The poems in the book The Painted Verse traverse the entire gamut of human emotions: joy and sorrow, love and rejection, hope and frustration and the spiritual refreshment of the mind and spirit. As these poems are accompanied by paintings which portray the thoughts and emotions of the poems, it is a delectable experience and that is what the book abundantly offers "From my brush to my canvas, My pen to my verses" is the beginning of the poem 'Alma', every line of which is moving and all the more so because of the accompanying painting.
The poem 'The Diva' whose theme is beautifully illustrated and accompanied by the painting is an exhilarating composition. We experience the meaning and intense emotion of sorrow, movingly expressed through simple words in the poem 'I am Sorry. Love and associated joys and pains are poignantly penned and painted in the composition 'I Know, My Love'.
Some compositions are pure fun. It is refreshing to see how the mundane aspects of everyday life have been captured by the perceptive artists. 'And I Kicked Off My Shoes' is an absolute delight to read.
