The Vidyapeetha is happy to place in the hands of its readers this new edition of the Padyaracana, an anthology of Subhapitas, compiled by Laksmana bhatta, a resident of Ankola in Maharashtra. In all probability, it is a work of the begnining of the 17th century. Padyaracana was first published in the Kavyamala serica in 1908. This edition, based barely on two manuscripts, is faulty in many respects, Taking in view the importance of the work, Dr. J. Pathak of this Vidyapeetha has attempted a fresh edition of the text by means of another three manuscripts, two procured from the Bhandarkar Oriental Research Institute, Poona and one from the personal Collection of Shri Prem nath Tripathi of Mirzapur. Of these the last mentioned manuscript is of special importance. Not only does it represent the text more faithfully but also proves that the popularity of Padyaracana was not confined to Maharashtra region only.
This new edition of Padyaracanã has the advantage of presenting much improved readings of the verses as well as of recording the variant readings. The importance of this edition has been considerably enhanced by the three appendices first of which gives a succint account of the poets whose verses have been incorporated in the text, the secoud one explains the more difficult expressions of the text and the third one is an alphabetical list of the verses together with their known sources. In this index Dr. Pathak has tried to give references to the appearance of many older verses in other subhasita-anthologies as well.
