The book outshines an Intermediate or Hades life, a life in which every person enters at the moment of death, in a physically unclothed or disembodied state. It is a mid way existence between the Earth-life and the future Heaven-life. According to the Author, many Christian teachers and writers have barely mentioned the existence of this Intermediate life. And, those who have, enshroud it such, it seems that this life has vague, and unreal existence, i.e., it is a veritable "world of shadows". But, this book shows that Hades life is a real phase of human existence, as is the present Earth-life and as will be the Heaven-life.
The sermons embodied in this Treatise, make the exposition more exhaustive and connected. The book is not mere few months' reflection but it is the result of convictions that were maturing within the author for a period of more than twenty years.
This intellectual presentation, away from insensible speculations, brings out the real truth of 'life after death' from a Biblical perspective thus scaring away those ugly shadows which overhung so much of the theology of the past. It will be helpful to those who are earnest students of God's truth, those who want to delve deeper into the subject including Christian Laity, Church Clergies, Researchers and Students, alike.
Rev. Arthur Chambers (1853?-1918) was the Vicar of Brockenhurst, Hampshire and Associate of King's College, London. He had authored and edited many books, Man and the Spiritual World as Disclosed by the Bible, The Queen of Atlantis Problems of the Spiritual, and many more.
I LITTLE thought when, in February 1894, I ventured to write this book, that I should be called upon to add a Preface to its 121st Edition.
One great feeling holds possession of me as I take up the pen. I am humbly and deeply grateful that from so many earnest thinkers and mourning ones in all parts of the world, the testimony has unceasingly come that this little work has helped and comforted them. It has had twenty-two years of life; and if God should vouchsafe to let it still live on, and continue to be the instrument of enabling yet others to better and more clearly see His Love and Purpose, and the glory of the redeeming Christ, to Him be the praise.
