I am immensely pleased to write a few lines as foreword to this innovative compilation by an eminent Sanskrit scholar, Dr. (Smt) Sarasvati Mohan, whose six decades of service to Sanskrit is world renowned.
Sanskrit, the oldest living language, contains vast literature touching nearly every aspect of human life. Developing continuously for over five millennia, it abundantly itself with unparalleled relevant knowledge and wisdom. It serves a purpose today more vital than ever before. Globally appreciated, its ageless Subhasita literature of “good-sayings” is by far the richest repository of ideas. For a well-versed person, indeed, each word may stand as a Subhasita in itself
Dr. Sarasvati Mohan is absolutely right to claim that people have great interest in learning Sanskrit. A small book in hand, rich in I express my sincere compliments to the compiler and wish her unique effort will further kindle interest for future generations to learn Sanskrit and lead a life of wisdom.

Over six decades, I have come across many who have great respect for Sanskrit. But work or lifestyle may not permit them to study the language systematically. But work or lifestyle may not permit to study the language systematically. If remembered and recited when possible, even a single Sanskrit quotation might provide them immense joy. Hence, through these last ten years, I selected easily understandable and memorable quotes to enable such people to enjoy ON QUOTE A DAY. I hope it occupies a prominent place on their desk or near their workplace.
I proudly express my gratitude to several of my students who helped me to bring out this book. I am grateful to. Dr. Charles Poncet for financing this printing; Ms. Mani Rao for enhancing the translation through her critical study of English; Sri Madhukeshwara Hegde for scrutinizing the with his Sanskrit language expertise; and Mrs. Kamala Paul, a native English speaker, for carefully honing the translation to ensure clarity for westerners. Most of these quotes have been serially presented online as “Quote of the Day” by a prior senior student, Mr, Seth Craighead, who created, managed the site, www.samskrtam.org, and by Sri Judu llavarasu in the site, www.sanskrit-academy.com, which was created and maintained by another senior student, Sri Vishwa Krishnamurthy.
It pleases me that these students of mine are continuing work on my mission, to bring Sanskrit within reach of everyone. With the invaluable help of these students, I have been able to review texts and translations of these quotes despite being afflicted with Age Related Macular Degeneration (ARMD).
I have also to thank Sudarsan Graphics for their beautiful and meticulous rendering of this printing. For two decades, Sudarsan Graphics has cooperated and encouraged me in my mission to create children’s books and games in Sanskrit.
