Book Description
About the Book

As Chanakya says: "Knowledge, virtue and prosperity cannot be achieved instantly; one has to toil relentlessly for them, as drop of water gradually fills up a pitcher, so do knowledge, virtue and wealth accumulate little by little." From here on wards, as the legendry Swan picks up pearls only, I started collecting pearls of quotations, jotted them down in my diary and later on in computer, and when my pitcher was full to the brim, it is before you in the form of this book. While reading the book, a serious reader may experience two things, first, the majority of the quotations radiate a tinge of spiritual connotation, and second, the citations transcend religion, cast, colour, language and even the geographical boundaries, reminding us, as the Indian scriptures profess, "The entire world is a family". It also proves and strengthens the opinion that fundamental value-systems of the humanity are the same. This reader- friendly book is a compendium of about more than 2000 motivational quotations. Attempt has been made to, broadly, group them into alphabetical order. Since the core themes of the quotations often overlap each other, the classification is not to the perfection. However, it is hoped that the book will be well received.

Preface

There is a word in Sanskrit, 'Sutra', which is translated in English as, 'formula'. It is a Latin word, which literally means, 'Little form'. I interpret 'Sutra' as 'Small in content but vast in meaning'. In most the ancient Indian literature, like the Vedas, the Upanishads and the Gita; their verses are, in fact, in the form of Sutras. Quotations are also small in content, but vast in meaning; therefore, they may be taken as the contemporary word for the Sutras. Keeping in mind the above, the title of the book is given as, "Ocean in the Pitcher", which is an approximate translation of the old Hindi proverb, "Gagar me Sagar".

A Quotation is a repeat or copy out words from a text or speech written or spoken by another person. During speech, discussion or formal chat, if someone quotes a "Quotation", he is, in reality, reciting, repeating, restating, reproducing or retelling what has already been said, written or published by somebody else, particularly when the quoted expression is well-known or explicitly attributed by citation to its original source. The quotation is indicated by quotation marks (* ") or (""). There are many quotations; that are anonymously authored, which mostly come from ancient literature, proverbs, adage, slogans and folk songs. The speaker or a writer not only wants to strive to be eloquent and pointed in his speech/writing, but also wants to improve its credibility. In this regard, quoting experts' opinion on the subject and use of phrases is of great help. By my own personal experiences, I can vouchsafe that on the individual level that inspirational quotes can make people walk extra mile to achieve their goals. Moreover, quotations help in overcoming fear, boost your confidence, self-esteem and inner strength and empower and encourage you to live life to the fullest. Motivational quotations, picked up from other persons' writings are the easiest source to improve your quality of life. Every work, every action has some reason, some motive, or, history behind it. The present collection of quotations also has personal reason behind it. I was born in one of the most backward tribal areas of Madhya Pradesh in an environment cultural, educational and economic, which, in no way could be called favorable to developing an impressive and wholesome personality. As Darwin's law says: Like begets like, I too inherited all the traits- - anger, aggression, honesty, sincerity and sensitivity. However, unfortunately, I was born with additional negative personality traits; I was hugely afraid of ghosts and spirits, darkness and snakes.in Until I passed Hindi Middle (seventh standard), barring the course books, I had not seen or heard of any book, magazine or newspaper. Since, in the middle school level I was always among the first two high scorers; as rewards, I got a couple of pocket-book additions of Bhagwad Gita published by Gita Press Gorakhpur.

However, the Gita looked so complicated that, to me, it was like a 'Kala akshar, bhains barabar '(for an illiterate, there is no difference between black alphabets and a buffalo). My real understanding of the Gita began when, I was principal in a government college of Bhopal, and on my transfer, a Christian professor presented me an English addition of Bgagwad Gita by S. Radhakisishnan. After several readings, I realised that each verse of the Gita is a sort of quotation and there is no aspect of life that Gita does not have solution. I started applying appropriate verses of Gita to the negative aspects of my personality and now I can claim that I am almost a reconditioned person.
