Book Description
Acknowledgement

This work is a revised version of my MPhil research entitled "Developments of the Concept "Fetter" (Samyojana) in the Pali Canon" which I submitted to The University of Hong Kong (HKU) for my Master of Philosophy Degree in 2017. Professor Venerable K.L. Dhammajoti admitted me as a research student in 2014 and supervised my studies until his retirement in 2015. I feel so blessed to have had the chance to learn from him. I am since most indebted to Professor G.A. Somaratne for his earnest supervision, and Professor Toshiichi Endo for his tireless support as co-supervisor. I am grateful towards Professor Oliver Abeynayake (Sri Lanka), and Professor Georgios T. Halkias (HKU), examiners of my MPhil thesis, for their guidance.

I would take this opportunity to thank Prof. Vijay Chaudhary, Principal cum Dean, R.GGP.G Ayurvedic College & Hospital, Paprola for providing facilities for this work and being the constant source of motivation.

Preface

The discourses of the Buddha in the Pali Canon contain, taken to be the standard, of ten psychological factors called 'fetters' (samjoyana). The individual factors in this list appear in various other contexts playing the roles of mental defilements of varying degrees as obstacles and hindrances to achieving progress in the soteriological path leading to Nibbana.
