It gives me immense pleasure to write Preface to the Biography of Dr William Dar, Director General of ICRISAT, who is a great research scientist and an embodiment of humanity, benevolence, progress and peace and whose high value contributions in agricultural research and technological innovations will be remembered for long. When I was the Commissioner of Rural Development (2000-2004), I had an opportunity of working in partnership with ICRISAT on watershed development and Rural Livelihood Programmes of the State Government. Again as Principal Secretary, Agriculture (2013-14), we forged partnership with ICRISAT for "Bhuchetana Programme". During the course of our interaction with Dr. Dar, I found him very knowledgeable about his subject, humble and down to earth. Born in a poor farmer's family in Philippines, Dr Dar has, by virtue of his hard work and tenacity has risen to top positions at global level. Dr Dar has left an indelible mark on ICRISAT's achievements in the fields of participatory irrigation water management, genetic improvement in groundnut tolerant to the water stress and diseases, sweat corn, open access agriculture, varietal development in red gram and bengal gram and climate resilient agriculture, to name a few.
