To face death nine times, that too in one life and still alive with all limbs intact, appears miraculous. Such is the gripping story of the Novel 'Nine Lives ofa Cat'. Child Sassi, rescued from a boat-wreck, is renamed Shashi Mohan on adoption by his new family. He is commissioned as an officer in the Army. This is not a story from 'Womb to Tomb' but a narrative from 'cradle to saddle', as after nine falls Shashi is still vigorously riding the 'Life Horse'. Ten years old Shashi escaped the partition massacre at Multan in August 1947 by millionth of an inch. Sixty years old Shashi gave another slip to Yama, the god of death, when riding a mare, his head crashed into the thick branch of a tree. During the intervening fifty years, he defied seven other life threatening encounters, some angel invariably appearing at the right time to rescue him. This novel conveys the message as to how with love in heart and perseverence in action, hurdles in life could be surmounted. Shashi Mohan's gradual spiritual transformation highlights as to why a physically elusive God has become an essential part of the human race. A remarkably true story in real-time setting is convincingly narrated with military precision. There is wit and romance too. The book is neither an autobiography, nor a biography or a novel. It is a unique blend of all the three, creating a fascinating fictional narrative.
