Foreword
Ayurveda is known to be one of the most ancient sciences of Medicine is not surprising to see the existence of this science for the last decades of centuries even when the entire global picture was seen to have changed altiple times. Many nations have been out of world map It doesn't mean that it had a glory of existence throughout its period. Ayurveda had also many upheavals in recent past due to political and cultural conflicts by invaders. In spite of these, it not only survived but also have emerged towards becoming a main stream medicine because of its innate strength.

Ayurveda has eight specialities. All these eight specialities are concerned with the Hetu (Causative factors) Linga (Signs and symptoms) and the Aushadha (treatment and management). This is the reason why Roga Nidana is known as the main stay to all these branches. Hetu and Linga inana comprises of various steps which underlines the importance of knowing why and how of a disease This is the fundamental step to plan Aushadha. Charaka Samhita and Sushruta Samhita are the two main treatises among many, are known to be the most systematically recorded evidence-based information on Medicine. Later authors like Madhavakara, have dedicated their works entirely on the Nidana Panchaka. Emergence of western Medicine have both positive and negative impact on Ayurveda. Education system of Ayurveda has dramatically changed from ancient Gurukula system to University systems which is awarding Degree. Post degree and post-Doctoral recognition. Positive impact of these developments is the systematic study of Ayurveda to the present needs where an effort is being made to blend Ayurveda with the Western Medicine This is in the infantile stage. However, the doctors of western system are showing keen interest in Ayurveda system after finding shortcomings in their field of Medicine. The negative impact is the doctors of Ayurveda are gradually shifting their priorities from learning Ayurveda to leaming Modem system. This approach has affected severely to the practise of Ayurveda. This is the reason why the apex Body of Ayurveda has framed syllabus to cater the present needs of blending Ayurveda and Western Medicine.

Text books and reference books play an important role in systematic study where the topics are methodically arranged for ease of study. These books are authored by many scholars of Ayurveda of different specialties. This is also true in case of Roga Nidana specialty. However, many of those books failed to fulfil the needs of the student community either by lacking in communication or in content. Sometimes even it is found that original content of treatises is distorted.

The present Text book entitled 'Nidana Prakasha- a text book of Roga Nidana' is authored by Dr Gopikrishna S Acharya and is a well-known teacher. At present he is the Professor, Department of Roga Nidana & Vikriti Vijnana and Dean Academics (Interns training and placement) Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda & Hospital Hassan Karnataka. I know him since his college when he was studying UG Course at Sri Dharmasthala Manjunatheshwara College of Ayurveda & Hospital, Kuthpady, Udupi. He was very studious and introverted. He was a voracious reader and always showing keen interest in the analysis of the verses written by ancient He completed his MD (Ay) in Roga Nidana from Kannur University which further consolidated his knowledge.
