Political governance in our postmodern days, needs fresh ideas. The prevalence of poverty is an expression of injustice. This exposes the inability of politics to deal with the issues of truth and justice. In this book, the author brings out the major historical and philosophical discussions, which contributed towards the evolution of the state as an institution of politics, and democracy as a form of governance.
The author believes that politicians will be better positioned to address the issues of injustice only if they are able to derive spiritual resources from religion. Religious resources can make politicians conscientious while handling power. In this context, the author brings out an exegesis of the Gospel of Jesus, which transformed Western political societies.
India is fortunate in having a multi-religious society, and its political system can benefit from this. The challenge is to develop a common mission of religions which can encounter political society and make it more responsive.
The global political governance cries for new energies as it looks enervated of creative ideas. The existence of millions of poor people, including the 300 and odd millions in India, juxtaposed to those who live in affluence, calls for a complete overhauling of the wheels of governance. Poverty in our post- modern days is unjustifiable. Humanity has got the technological mastery to produce goods and services to satisfy the needs of all. Yet millions are in the grip of hunger, starvation, and are haunted by diseases. Political scientists awaken us to the reality that people die of hunger in front of food-stock. This is appalling and is an affront to the polity we all share.
The gap between the rich and the poor is ever widening on a menacing scale. In the pre-programmed life-style, people have little time to think about anything other than their routine chores of life. Thus there is a degree of insensitivity ranging from indifference to contempt towards those who are disadvantaged. Our democracies, political systems and governments prove inadequate to distribute the wealth of nations with a sense of justice.
The idea of nation-states is giving way to global governance. Mega Trans-National Corporations (TNCs) with stupendous financial clout wield enormous sway over national governments.
