Book Description
Foreword

In the present book, Professor Nandita Bandyopadhyay has acquainted us with a highly technical subject in a methodical manner.

The Paninians' Theory of Meaning has admittedly a modern flavour appreciated by even the West today, and this theory finds culmination in the works of the Navya Vaiyakarana Nagesabhatta, especially in his Laghumanjusa and the Paramalaghumanjusa. Many of his doctrines can be traced back to the works of Patanjali and Bhartrhari, the great savants of the Sabdadvaita School. But credit goes to Nagesa for seeing the old in th old in a new light. Introduction of Vyanjana or suggestion as a distinct verbal function bears evidence to this. His works are also remarkable for searching out the metaphysical influence that has worked behind and eventually moulded the semantic theories of the Paninians. In this context he also examines a good number of metaphysical concepts put forward by the idealists and realists alike. The present work is a critical study of the paninian theories of bauddhartha and Akihandkavakyarth compared with many semantic views of the West. The DSA, Sanskrit, expects similar other works from Prof. Bandyopadhyay.
