The Andhra Pradesh State Archives and Research Institute is a treasure house of Persian documents belonging to the 17th and 18th Centuries and throwing light on Mughal administration in India. These documents are of great value for the study of administrative, economic and social history of the entire Deccan including Tanjore, Trichnopally and Gingi areas in South India.
The largest collection of documents pertains to the reign of Aurangzeb. It gives me immense pleasure to place before the academic world the work of compilation of the catalogues of the documents pertaining to the reign of Aurangzeb and their periodical publications. The four catalogues in six Parts brought out earlier, were well received in literary and scholastic circles. This is the V volume (Part 1) consisting of 2,616 documents.
The Mughal era is a very significant and eventful period in the history of India. Many historians described the Mughal Government as a paper Government because each and every action of administration was recorded on the paper. But unfortunately, much of the Mughal record was destroyed over the years and whatever could be salvaged, was preserved in A.P.State Archives, which is the richest repository of Persian records.
The labour and skill expended on the task by Smt.Zareena Parveen, Senior Research Assistant who compiled this volume, deserves high appreciation.
The others who deserve mention are Smt. G.Suseela Raju, Deputy Director, Sri Syed Azam-ul-Hussaini, Dr. P.Krishna Moorthy, Assistant Directors, Smt. Atiya Shaheen, Junior Research Assistant, Smt. Saleemunnisa, Typist and Sri Md. Ahmeduddin, Junior Assistant.
I hope that the serious scholars and researchers in Mughal History shall find this volume as useful as the earlier ones.
The Department of Andhra Pradesh State Archives holds in its possession ession various categories of invaluable records of enormous quantity, from the early 15th Century to this date. Among the various categories of records Scientifically preserved in this Archives, the category of the Mughal Records pertaining to the periods of Shah Jahan and Aurangzeb is the oldest. We have been bringing out continuously catalogues of documents pertaining to the period of Aurangzeb from 1975 onwards under the scheme sanctioned by the Government of Andhra Pradesh. So far, four volumes in six parts consisting of approximately 22,000 documents from Ist to 8th regnal year of Aurangzeb have been compiled and brought out. Now, we have taken up the compilation of the documents pertaining to 9th regnal year and the present catalogue (Vol.V, Part-1) consists of 2,616 documents of the first 6th months of the 9th regnal year (1666 A.D.).
This catalogue too, has the same format of those of the earlier catalogues. In order to make this part of Volume-V complete with total data and information, all the necessary material has been systamatically classified into categories and clearly listed out. It also contains abbreviations along with English translation besides Glossary of Mughal terminology and the Index of persons and places.
It would not be out of place to mention that we have undergone a rigorous training in deciphering the Persian documents of the Mughal period in Shikasta hand writing and have the necessary background of the Mughal administration for having a clear idea about the contents of the documents.
We are extremely grateful to Sri Lal Rosem, I.A.S., our learned Commissioner, who has shown special interest in the research activities and the development of this Department with a special stress on expediting the early compilation of this catalogue in targeted time schedule.
We are also thankful to Smt. G.Suseela Raju, Deputy Director, for her able guidance and also Sri Azam-ul-Hussaini, Assistant Director and Dr.P.Krishna Moorthy, Assistant Director for their help in bringing out the catalogue in time. We wish to thankfully make a special mention for the services rendered by Smt. Atiya Shaheen, junior Research Assistant, through this project and also our thanks are due to Sri Md. Ahmeduddin, Junior Assistant, Smt. Saleemunnisa and Sri Syed Khursheed Hussain, Typists, who all worked hard as a team in bringing out this volume.
I hope this catalogue, like the earlier catalogues, will be of immense use not only to innumerable research student in our country and abroad, but also, to all the readers and writers.
