The Mudraraksasa by Visakhadatta is a drama of political intrigue which due to not conforming to the set pattern of dramaturgy, has long been underrated and a victim of wry diatribe. Having an exceedingly complicated plot, this play is beautifully constructed with an amazing dexterity. Shakespeare, after centuries. composed the Julius caesar which like its distant predecessor comprises mainly male characters who display their political wit combined with conspiracies and ruthless manoeuvres to grab the power. The present play has been a huge success owing to its flow and entertaining temperament. It is not a usual love-tale but a problem play. Though composed by a feudatory, it equally expresses the voice of the downtrodden and afflicted masses. Free from inhibitions, the play holds an exalted place and everlasting lustre on the whetstone of dramatic art and aesthetics.
