It gives me pleasure to offer this volume in the hands of Vedic scholars. The Volume contains research papers which were presented, discussed and revised as per the discussions in the National Seminar held from 24/12/1996 to 26/12/1996 on "Metaphors in Vedic Literature". The Seminar was organized by our Centre with the financial support of the Rashtriya Vedavidya Pratishthanam, Ujjain and University Grants Commission. Our Centre acknowledges this help with sense of gratitude. The aim behind organizing this Seminar was to impress upon the need to take up an ambitious project of preparing Dictionary of Metaphors in ancient traditions. As a first step towards that direction, it was felt to organize a National Seminar in order to assess the need for such a project. The project will be a multi-volume project covering different periods of literary history of India. Needless to say, the first volume will focus on the Vedic period.
The papers included in this volume will speak for themselves the necessity of undertaking such a longterm project.
I am sure that scholars will welcome this Volume and will help the project mentioned above materialize in its proper form. I seek valuable suggestions in this respect from scholars.
I thank my colleagues and students for helping me in going through the proofs of this volume.
