I feel immense pleasure to be asked to write the Foreword to "Menopause-A paradigm shift through Ayurveda."
The Menopause is a time of change both mentally and physically, as well as spiritually. It is a time of life when a woman needs to stand back, take deep breath and realise that she has at least another 30-40 years of good living to do and needs to move forward in a positive way. When they told me about the topic and theme I encouraged them to go for it knowing it would be a remarkable book.
In this very book on the menopause, the authors review different Ayurvedic and Modern parameters and complex choices that women have to make during this particular stage. What I like about this book is the comprehensive compilation of all the Ayurvedic, other alternative and contemporary sciences that will allow the students to get a clear idea and picture of menopause. The authors have written a good assemblage of Ayurved other than conventional HRT.
The author's efforts are admirable in comprehending the concept of Ayurved and Modern science. It is a matter of appreciation that Vd. Khyati.S.Sud and Vd. Sushant. S. Sud has written such an excellent book at this young age and they are really entailed with a lot of admirations. This book will definitely be useful as a reference book to the undergraduate as well as post graduate students of Ayurved. Once again, congratulations to the authors to serve the field of Ayurved in the form of this book.
I am glad to introduce a book on Menopause which is one of the most important physiological events in a woman's life. Menopause is a comprehensive account of aspects of life beginning from the transition phase a woman is in between 40-50 years and post menopausal age. This remains a time of changeover for women and brings many issues of interest to the gynaecologist as menopause has gained increased attention as a trigger of many complex psychological and postmenopausal health problems, such as anxiety, cvd, osteoporosis, metabolic disorder and others. Menopausal symptoms and associated disorders are of great importance for public health. Planning for this stage of life is necessary so as to enjoy a good quality of life. Our medical science has made tremendous advancement in understanding the menopausal symptomatology and bodily changes that follows after cessation of menstruation. Our Indian system of medicine "Ayurved" has described menopause as a natural effect of aging and does not reflect any disease. Depending on whom you ask, Menopause can be labelled as either a disease or a life transition. Typically, people in Western societies see Menopause as a "disease." People from Eastern descent often sail through menopause without a wave.
Women are now forthcoming with complaints related to dry vagina, hot flashes, night sweats and urinary symptoms. Treating these ailments and disturbances improves quality of life. The narrations in the different chapters of the book attempts to answer as many questions as possible that may go through the mind of the reader.
Premature menopause, occurring before the age of 40, may result from several causes. Some of them are well established, whereas the others have largely unknown aetiology. Risk factors, causes and complications of premature menopause are also re-viewed in this book. As woman grows older she would also succumb to age related diseases like hypertension, diabetes, obesity, variey of gynaecological and psychological disorders etc are seen and therefore she will be consulting number of experts for each of the ailment. Taking control of her body and life hence involves deriving sufficient knowledge of both wellness and illness so that the woman stays in the driving seat in deciding the best treatment options or combinations of treatments with advice from health cares by providing attention to good nutrition, yoga, regular exercise and management of stressors are equally important.
This is not a book that presents menopausal women as sick, hysterical, or out of control, and it definitely is not a book devoted to clinical line of treatment, instead it is a book that describes the classical and contemporary approach towards the understanding of menopause which a reader should know with all ambivalence. This Book show-cases the most classical and current knowledge about menopause: its aetiology and management. It is targeted at the wide audience of students and medical professionals in various areas, including but not limited to obstetrics and gynaecology, reproductive health, gerontology, oncology and public health.
The book is made in a descriptive chapter wise manner to highlight the Modern as well Ayurvedic view of Menopause describing the life-style, physiological and genetic factors, which determine menopause and its onset. The chapters also discuss about two main approaches at treatment of menopausal symptoms namely HRT which is currently a prevailing treatment option and its pros and cons. However, alternative methods of non-hormonal menopause therapy become more and more popular and readily avail-able as a matter of efficacy and safety concern with special emphasis on Ayurved Chikitsa guidelines and parameters.
The authors of this book sincerely feel that the women need to know about what may really be causing menopausal turmoil. There is an impressive body of research with much needed information on the topic. Unfortunately by far, most of the findings from this body of research have made their way out to medical and other professional journals but an authentic explanatory book on Menopause is still the need of hour.
The authors of this book hope that their efforts will benefit not only the under-graduate students but also to the PG and PhD Scholars for their research work.
On behalf of all contributors we would like to thank Prof. Anup Thakar Director IPGT&RA, Gujarat Ayurved University for writing the foreword and Chaukhambha Publishers for their support.
