In India, it is said that the mother and father are a child's first gurus or masters. In my case it is literally true as I learn yoga from my mother and film making from my father, who is the most famous film director in Finland. I grow up in the apartment building where the most famous actors of Finland live, I play with them as a child, and I watch my father making films with them.
When I am about ten years old, my mother, who is an actress, participates in a yoga course given by an Indian yogini who happens to visit Finland in the early 1960's. My mother takes the course because my father is wrestling with alcoholism, and she wants to find something that will give her mental balance in the midst of our family problems. My father's alcoholism and my mother's constant worry about my father, who disappears. for his drunkard tours, and their quarrels make my childhood emotionally insecure. Later my father goes to AA meetings and becomes sober. This teaches me that man can overcome his addictions and grow spiritually.
Before his recovery, my mother finds yoga, and becomes quite excited about finding completely new areas in her lungs as a result of the yogic breathing. She speaks admiringly about her teacher, the Indian yogini who is so flexible that she can cross her legs as naturally as a child.
