About the Book The book deals with all aspects of the Medieval History of India in detail. In this book the events have been recorded in chronological order in a simple manner so as to meet the requirements of the students and the common readers. The author has presented and authoritative and readable survey of Medieval Indian history incorporating the accounts of the various events as clearly as possible. The book will serve both as a standard book of Indian history for the students and general readers and also as an important source for further research relating to the development of the Indian history through different successive stages.

About the Author Dr. Lalita Sharma, Masters of Arts in History from Kumauni University, M.A. in Education, B.Ed. from C.C.S University are some of her key qualifications to list. In the year 1998 she started her career in the education world as a teacher and went head to become a Vice Principal. As teaching was her passion she took to teaching students for professional courses at graduate and post graduate level. Currently she is a visiting faculty with IAMR Group of Institutions, Ghaziabad and Meerut. She is an active member with many professional bodies and has published couple of research papers.

Preface The Medieval Period of Indian History comprises a long, period, spanning from 6th century. i.e., after the fall of the Gupta Empire to the 18th century, i.e., the beginning of colonial domination. Modern historians, for the convenience of studying the state and society of medieval India, usually divide the period into Early Medieval Period and Late Medieval Period. According to them the Early Medieval period refer to the phase of Indian history that stretches from the fall of the Gupta Empire to the beginning of the Sultanate period in the 13th century. The period that comprises mainly that of the reigns of the Sultanate and the Mughal period are generally considered as the late medieval period, of course with regional variations.

The nature of state in the early medieval period is marked by the presence of a large number of regional and local powers, in the absence of a paramount power in the country. However, this period witnessed the presence of formidable political entities, often characterized by certain historians as 'regional imperial kingdoms. But in the late medieval period, especially in the Sultanate and Mughal reigns, high level of centralization of power is identifies, that too in the major parts of the Indian sub continent.
