Introduction

Ayurveda is one of the ancient system of medicine developed in India. Various theories, in relation to the aetiology, diagnosis and treatment are mentioned in Ayurveda which are different from the other system of medicine. In Ayurveda treatment described as a team work which consist of Catuspadas-physician, medicine attendant and patient, Patient is considered as the most important part of these four components. Various qualities and duties of physician are described in Ayurveda where ethical value is given prime importance.

Medical ethics is the branch of knowledge that deals with moral principles so the ethics of physician means moral principles or behaviour or conduct in an activity related to a physician during practice.

We find many references of medical ethics in Ayurvedic texts (Sisyopaniya adhyaya (A.S.Su. 2), Sisyopaniya adhyaya upakrama (Su.S.Su. 2), Yogasutriyam adhyaya upakrama (Su.S.Su. 9), Visikhanupravesaniya adhyaya upakrama (Su.S.Su. 10), Khuddakacatuspada adhyaya (C.S.Su. 9), Tisraisaniya adhyaya (C.S.Su. 11), Dasapranayataniya adhyaya (C.S.Su. 29). Though there are changes many aspects of medical ethics are relevant even today. The main changes are seen in the medicolegal aspects as the legal system prevailing in those days in the form of royal hierarchy has been replaced by legal system today, which has been adopted from British legal system. Hence, the need of the hour is that Every practitioner must be aware of the basics of medicolegal aspects.

Last but not the least : Practice the golden rule when treating a patient : 'Do unto others as you would have them do unto you'.
