The late Mr. H. Krishna Sastri's monograph entitled The New Asokan Edict of Maski (Hyderabad Archæological Series, No. r) was published by the Govern- ment of Hyderabad forty years ago. Recently the authorities of the Archæo- logical Department, Hyderabad State, resolved to publish a revised edition of the book and I was entrusted with the work of revision. During the long period that has elapsed since the publication of Krishna Sastri's monograph, several scholars have written on the Minor Rock Edict of Asoka in general and the Maski text of it in particular. No less than five more versions of the Edict have also been dis- covered during this period. It was therefore felt that, to do justice to the subject, I should rewrite the whole work.
