The Marxist approach to ancient Indian History is a recent phenomenon and with the passage of the time its popularity is gradually increasing. Many a work has already come our reviewing many aspects of Indian history and culture from this point of view. There is yet no work which seeks to describe the theoretical supposition of the Marxist approach and its practical application for the interpretation of ancient Indian history. The present monograph by Dr.Shankar Goyal seeks to fulfil this lacuna. He has tried to explain and examine critically how the Marxist approach may rectify an over-emphasis and how it sidetracks and belittles the great cultural legacy of our country.
I must record my special thanks to Shri.A.N.Gokhale, Academic Superintendent of BORI, for his painstaking proof-reading. I have also to thank Shri Kishor Khurjekar for the graceful printing of the book and Prof.S.D.Laddu for taking keen interest in the publication of the book.
