About the Book

Somesvara III was a king at Kalyana in Karnataka, who ruled from 1127 to 1139 A.D. That was a peaceful period. So, Somesvara could devote his time to the composition of Manasollasa which is an enylopaedia. Dr. M.N. Joshi has dealt with all the topics which are systematically treated by the author of Manasollasa which is literally a desire yielding jewel for the information devoutly wished for i.e. Abhilasitarthacintamani. Our ancestors were widely and rightly, known for their phenomenal pursuit of knowledge.

This book “Manasollasa and Ayurveda” is divided into Five chapters. The first chapter deals with the significance of Manasollasa and in short date, life, and works of Somesvara III. The Second chapter gives a picture of the Manasollasa as an Ancient Treatise on Ayurveda. The third chapter describes Basic concepts of Ayurveda. In this chapter, the author mentions a few notable names associated with different sciences in India during different periods. The authors have furnished a detailed information about the Environment and Ayurveda in the fourth chapter. It is also stated that the imbalance in any part of nature affects the life as a whole and therefore, tries to maintain harmony among the members of the universe was felt a necessity. The Fifth chapter provides the details of physical and Mental Health, Prevention of disease which is necessary for promotion of health.

There is at the end a Glossary of select Sanskrit words and select Bibliography for the usefulness of the book. Every topic is dealt with book. Every topic is dealt with exhaustively. This book proves that Sanskrit is a treasure of sufficient details regarding medical science.

 

About the Author

Dr. M. N. Joshi has completed his M. A. and got his Ph.D. degree from the Karnatak University, Dharwad in 1985. Soon after, he joined the Department of Sanskrit as a lecturer. At present, he is Reader and Chairman of Sanskrit Department, and also he is working as a co-ordinator of UGC/DSA/SAP/Phase II Programme inducted in the Dept. of Sanskrit K. U., Dharwad.

In the Dept. he had conducted three National Seminars on i.e., 1. Ecological Awareness in the Agamas” (Sept. 2000); 2. “Veerasaivism in Saigames”. (Sept. 2001); 3. “The Concept of Beauty according to Indian Poets and Aestheticians” (Oct. 2002) sponsored by the UGC Delhi. And he has conducted two days workshop on “Research Methodology in Sanskrit”—sponsored by Karnatak University Dharwad.

Dr. Joshi has engaged himself in active Research studies since 1980. He has been guiding eight students working for Ph.D. He has already produced three Ph.D.holders.

Dr. Joshi, has to his credit twenty-one books in Kannada as well as in English. In addition to Sanskrit Grammar, the Ayurveda is another field in which he has tried his level best to contribute to Sanskrit literature. His research papers are thirty-one and published in learned Journals. His latest book is “An Introduction to Ayurveda-padartha-vijnana” for BAMS First Year course.

He has been awarded the prestigious International Ramakrishna Award 2000, of Saraswati Vikas, Canada, and also was honoured, with the epithet—“Sahitya Visharada” from S. N. Seva Trust Sri Datta Ksetra Audumbar (Sangali), Mahara-shtra, for his contribution to Sanskrit literature.

 

Preface

It gives me great pleasure to place before the circle of our Sanskrit readers, my book “Manasollasa and Ayurveda”. In the present day life, which offers many temptations, we should not deviate from the path followed by our ancestors. Therefore, it is quite essential that we should gain proper knowledge from some of our ancient Treatises., That does help us to lead a peaceful and purposeful life on this earth.

I place on record my deep sense of gratitude to Dr. N.P. Unni, Ex-Vice-Chancellor, Sree Sankaracharya Sanskrit University, Kalady, Kerala for having graced this work ‘Manasollasa and Ayurveda’ with his valuable foreword and blessed me with best wishes from his heart of hearts. His valuable suggestions and guidelines have framed the soft corners of this work.

Many other scholars have encouraged and helped me in completing this work. Among them, mention has to be made of my teachers and colleagues. I express my gratitude to all these scholars for their help. I am grateful to my Ph.D. student Dr. B.S.
