Preface

Indian literature is the literature produced by Indians at any time, at any place and in any language. It is as old, vast and varied as the history of India. It began with the Vedic Sanskrit, journeyed through Prakrit, Pali and Apabhramsha and blossomed in the regional languages, out of which 18 have been recognized by the Constitution of India and 22 by the Sahitya Akademi. It is a unique quality of Indianness and is shared by the literature written in all the Indian languages. A five thousand year old cultural tradition holds India together. One or two dents have been made but, by and large the basic unity is there. Multilingualism is the very stuff of our nationhood. The collective myths, legends, forms, themes and trends have provided a strong appearance of unity to Indian literature. The present work Makers of Indian Literature, comprising two volumes attempts to underline the accomplishments of about 1,000 Indian writers, authors, poets, dramatists, essayists, critics, story-writers, novelists, translators and journalists. While Volume I covers the entries from A to L, Volume II is devoted to the write-ups from M to Z. These writers have, during the course of history, created an enormous treasure-house of ideas and emotions which belongs to India and constitutes an integral part of our heritage. The writers included in the two volumes have been drawn not only from all the recognized languages of India but also from Prakrit, Pali, Apabhramsha and Persian which have contributed to the growth and enrichment of Indian literature. The book has been designed to give a fairly clear and compre hensive idea of the vast creative talent available in India. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order and cover practically all the important writers who have carved out a place for themselves in the literary firmament of India.
