Book Description
Preface

Mahatma Gandhi Tryst with Satyagraha is my latest book (fourteenth) which envisages and gives details of Mahatma Gandhi's philosophy of truth and non- violence and his techniques of Satyagraha, truth force or passive resistance to combat the opponent. As Mahatma Gandhi himself said on outcome of Satyagraha, "In a gentle way, you can shake the world."

Champaran and Kheda movements transformed Gandhiji and in the process transformed India's destiny When a young Gandhi in South Africa declared an award for the title which eventually turned to be Satyagrahi, in Indian Opinion, on that very moment he may not have realized the significance and what exactly it will lead to the atrocities of a mighty empire combated brilliantly through civil disobedience, non cooperation, and above all through passive resistance or truth force. Little did he realize, that though at a moment he thought of walking the treacherous paths, alone, resist single handed the mighty empire, he believed in walking alone, ekla chalo re he sang on the way he will joined by millions in life and also in death.

It was in South Africa, looking into the plight of the British Indians, he had acquired the vision of Indian nationalism and made foundation. He used to coresspond with Gokhle regularly. He had assured him that he would return to India, on completion of his immediate task in South Africa It was by now clear to him, that his own motherland would be his Karma Bhumi as Janani Janamabbath cha sargadapi garesby (motherland is more precious that the heaven) goes the famous Sanskrit shloka and saying.

Truth word may be relative but truth being truth must be one and can't be challenged. When he writes in his autobiography candidly about his fallices, he realizes truth as a weapon cant be defeated, and the insistence for truth of satyagraha cant be challenged or defeated. At the end of the day, a self reliant nation is born, thanks to Bapu thanks to Mahatma.

For the sake of uniformity the same general order has been followed in the description of each climatic type, but different types lend them- selves to most satisfactory treatment in different ways; thus the arrangement is sometimes by seasons and sometimes by elements.

Introduction

Mahatma Gandhi, the father of our nation is most relevant today. The world is witnessing unprecedented violence and in this scenario, Mahatma Gandhi methods of Satyagraha to combat and resist the mighty British empire or may be any evil by passive resistance, by truth force by non-violent means are examples that is unprecedented in the history of mankind.

Mahatma Gandhi's methods of passive resistance or truth force in orgnaised way set up example and milestone in the history of the world. The present book, Mahatma Gandhi-Tryst with Satyagraha, delves deep into the Satyagrahi Bapu's formula for freedom by fasting, non-cooperation, civil disobedience and strikes- non violent methods to combat the mighty force of British empire where the sun never set. Satyagraha was a novel experiment and method which showed results in a manner what no one could imagine and more so expected.

Satyagraha had its origin in South Africa where as it known to all, he was humiliated on a train journey at Pietermaritzburg railway station in 1893 as an Indian by the British. He returned to his motherland in 1915. Bapu came to Champaran, Bihar as Satyagrahi for the first time in 1917, In his life time Mahatma Gandhi kept fast 17 times and the first one was during Ahmedabad Mill strike that happened in 1918 immediately before Kheda Satygraha in Gujarat(1918). His longest fast lasted 21 days during freedom movement of India. The book also deals with his techniques of Satyagraha and the movements where it was applied.

Fasting is a great technique of Satyagraha. Fasting was a weapon used by Gandha as part of his philosophy of Ahimsa or absolute non-violent method.

Passive resistance or truth force, emerged from his vision of creating a violence free world, taking the path of truth, to resist against injustice in a non-violent way- Utopia? I suppose looking at the present state of the world!
