The mission of the Department of Archaeology & Museums is to preserve and protect heritage for posteritv. Along with preservation which includes conservation and restoration of monuments, sites and antiquities, Implementing legislations to protect heritage, researching and disseminating out findings to the scholarly world through publications like monographs, excavation reports, catalogues, research bulletins is also the core function of the Department. As the department is research oriented in nature, more recently we have been vigorously endeavoring to publish our findings both in the areas of archacology & museums, thanks to the very encouraging support received from the Government of Andhra Pradesh, In the past 18 months we have been able to publish five publications in the field of archaeology and nine in muscums. This publication, Manaparinirvana, Sacred Buddhist Relics (with special reference to Bavikonda) focuses on the Great Decease (Mahaparinirvanal of the Great Master with special reference to the Relic Caskets discovered at the Bavikonda Buddhist Monastic Complex, Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh during the conservation of the Mahachaitva In the summer of 1993.
The Government decided to have a permanent exposition of the Sacred Relics in the Andhra Pradesh Stare Museum to enable one and all both in India and abroad to pay their respects.
