This is the first fascicule of the third volume, which is intended to record the proper names of the characters in the Mahabharata. The present fascicule contains entries beginning with Amla and ending with Araudra. While giving the details of these characters we have recorded all the information available on them in the Constituted Text as well as in the Critical Apparatus and the Appendices.
In case of homonymous personalities, for the same word there are more than one entries, since the personalities are different. In some cases, we have recorded the names as they appear in the Critical Apparatus also, in addition to those appearing in the Constituted Text. See, for example, the entry Agavaha, which is based upon the Critical Apparatus and not on the Constituted Text, which accepts the name Agavaha instead. The entry Agavaha will also come in accordance with the alphabetical order.
I wish to record sincerely my thanks to all the collaborators in this project. I would like particularly to mention Shri G. S. Karambelkar, Dr. Phillip Ernest, Dr. S. K. Lal for their contribution to this fascicule. Thanks are also due to Dr. Shreenand L. Bapat and Dr. Maitreyee Deshpande.
