Hearing the word of God with reverence and proclaiming it with faith is an imperative of every Christian believer. Fr. Scaria Kuthirakattel SVD, as Professor of Sacred Scripture for more than 35 years, has been proclaiming, teaching and witnessing to the word of God with great zeal and commitment, St. John made it clear in the beginning of his letter, "What we have seen and heard we announce to you, so that you may have fellowship with us and our common fellowship be with the Father and His Son Jesus Christ" (1 John 1:3). Fr. Scaria has tried his best to announce and communicate the Word so that our relationship with God and our fellowmen are deepened. This book, LOGOS: Proclaiming and Witnessing to God's Word, is a fitting tribute to his erudite biblical scholarship and passionate commitment to his teaching and preaching the Word of God. As Fr. Scaria enters his golden jubilee year of priesthood, LOGOS is an apt compliment for his long years of service to the Word and its proclamation through teaching. Being his student, I can say from my experience that he has not only taught the Word but also walked in the light of the Word. His simple life and clear teaching are proof of a life touched by the Word. As a member of a Society which has the proclamation of the Word as its primary charism, he has lived that to the full. As we know, the word of God is much broader than just the text itself, because its message is discerned in the faith-community and in its real-life situation. We realise that community and its Sitz im Leben form loci theologici for experiencing God in our midst. Therefore, the role of every minister of the word of God is to help the faith-community to discover where God is calling them in the hubbub of real life.
