Foreword

Mantralayam, a standing testimony to one of the greatest religious scholars India has produced, Sri Raghavendra Swamy, is a temple of hope for millions of believers. It holds out the promise of providing relief and salvation to those who knock at the doors of Sri Raghavendra Swamy.

Acknowledged as a great debater, even called mahabhashyakara, Sri Raghavendra Swamy comes in the lineage of Sri Madhwacharya, the proponent of Dwaita philosophy. He took Dwaita philosophy across the length and breadth of South India. Sri Raghavendra Swamy is the only head of a religious mutt established by Sri Madhwacharya to be called a 'Swamy', and the mutt headed by him came to be known as the Sri Raghavendra Swamy Mutt. His deeds during his lifetime made his name a byword for saintliness in so many households in the region. His connect with the people, irrespective of religion, caste or creed, is one of the factors that made Mantralayam a favourite among pilgrims.

The scholar-teacher-saint is known for his clear and vivid commentary on the Upanishads. His interpretations and annotations of the works of Sri Madhwacharya, Sri Teekacharya and Vyasaraja were impeccable.

This volume delineates the history and contributions Sri Raghavendra Swamy and the sage's formative years. He built his own brindavana (tomb) and entered it alive. After being devastated by floods in the Tungabhadra in 2009, a new Mantralayam was constructed in record time.

Successive heads of the Mutt have sustained the work of the sage to bring happiness to society by means of various activities. This volume presents an interview with the present head of the Mutt, Sri Subudhendra Theertharu, who outlines its activities, and the proposal to establish a university and start professional colleges in and around Mantralayam to provide higher and professional education principally to the needy and the poor.

The Hindu is pleased to bring out Sri Raghavendra Swamy: The Living Saint of Mantralayam, a special commemorative volume, as a tribute to the sage. We hope you will cherish this collector's edition.
