Preface
It was in 1987 that I heard of Foot Reflexology (FR) therapy. I was told that for all ailments - whether of the head, face, shoulder, chest or any part of the body, the treatment was given by pressing some points in the feet. My first reaction towards this peculiar remote control system was skeptical. It sounded like a fairy tale, but at the same time I came across authentic reports that this new therapy in less than 50 years had spread all over the world.
One thing was obvious that if the therapy was not result producing it could not have become popular so fast. Therefore, despite my initial apprehension, I decided to give this therapy a fair trial. I attended a four-day camp on the subject. This short training did ignite a keen interest in the subject though it could not give enough knowledge or confidence to experiment it on any patient. To get to the bottom of my quest, I wanted to learn more of it and then practice on some patients. I was lucky to lay my hands on some very good books but the knowledge gained was mostly theoretical.
Now I needed a pair of feet to practice on. My late wife, Raj Bahl, came to my rescue by volunteering to be an ungrudging guinea pig. I feel indebted to her for her unquestioning patience and participation. Today, a job that takes me just a few minutes to teach my students has behind it a joint effort of hours and hours to attain reasonable proficiency. With this oscillation between books for consultation and her feet for experimentation, my interest increased greatly. She, too, was a big gainer. Her severe chronic sinusitis disappeared. Earlier, the condition of her sinusitis was that for years her sinuses had been surgically punctured to take out the pus and to be followed by antibiotics. Frequent visits to ENT specialists had become a regular feature of her life. After her cure through FR, she lived ten years and there was no necessity for her to visit any ENT specialist even once.
This amazing cure plus similar successes in my early patients of assorted problems gave me so much encouragement that I became fully involved with FR and my passion turned into obsession. More and more patients started coming to me, and their number exceeded my capacity. At that stage, I thought of sharing with others the knowledge gathered by me and started training classes. I have trained hundreds of students, many of whom have become practitioners of FR. The training of a few hundred student does not cover the requirements of suffering humanity, whose number is far too large and hence the necessity of this book. The therapy is simple and through a well-written book the subject can be taught to the general public. This book is in the form of lectures, an improved and simplified version of the lectures delivered in my classes. In writing this book, every effort has been made
(a) To preserve its simplicity both in language and presentation, so that even a layman who does not have any medical background can take advantage of this wonderful therapy.
(b) Illustrations have been liberally added to facilitate understanding.
(c) I have gone about step by step for the students to grasp the subject and attain sufficient proficiency. The sequence of lectures will make this point clear.
(d) Elementary anatomy and physiology have been included bodily system-wise, so that the lay student understand at least the location and functions of various organs/glands.
I have come across books, which borrow the title from reflexology, but inside discuss various alternative therapies. All therapies have their own merits, but from the point of view of learning reflexology, the mixing of a number of therapies in a single book is not very helpful - instead it is confusion causing. This book is for teaching reflexology and only reflexology, a subject complete by itself. I believe that, if I could start from scratch and become a successful reflexologist, so could you. Hopefully this book would be of assistance to anyone with such aspirations. If after thorough reading of this book, the reader can understand reflexology and work on self and others, the purpose of this book will be fully served.
Since the book is in the form of lectures, it can be useful for those who may like to take up teaching of reflexology.
