Preface

The development of chronic diseases, specifically heart disease, stroke, diabetes, obesity, metabolic syndrome, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and some types of cancer which happen to be major cause of human sufferings today is caused by lifestyle behaviour primarily due to three modifiable lifestyle behaviour-smoking, unhealthy diet, and physical inactivity. These diseases are not only the major cause of suffering but also very prevalent and wide spread. Chronic disease can result in loss of independence, years of disability, or death, and impose a considerable economic burden on health services.

According to recent reports today, chronic diseases are a major public health problem worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimated that 61 per cent of all deaths-35 million and 49 per cent of the global burden of disease were attributable to chronic diseases in the year 2005. While by 2030, the proportion of total global deaths due to chronic diseases is expected to increase to 70 per cent and the global burden of disease to 56 per cent. The maximum increase is anticipated in the African and Eastern Mediterranean regions.
