In India, women have a special place in the society. No other society in the world gives so much respect and status to women as is being done in India. The woman's role as a wife is very venerable in the Hindu mythological concept. Her exalted position and participation is of vital importance in the various religious rituals and rites. The ancient concept of Hindu deities as ardhanareeshwar (half-woman, half-man) is of divine significance as it signifies that both are complementary entities or the former is inseparable from the latter one is incomplete without the other. Hindu gods are mostly depicted as in the posture of their consorts seated on the left along with them, in the benedictory posture, showering blessings on the devotees simultaneously.
It is a matter of irony that as the society evolved itself from the older days to the modern days, along with the changing norms of the society, woman's role and image too underwent a tremendous metamorphosis and along with the West the stature of women had a roller coaster ride. From the much elevated adulatory status she was brought down to the abyss of social degradation and deprivations. The societal stigma towards women touched such a nadir that even the birth of a girl child was considered as ominous. She felt segregated from the family as well as the kith and kin due to societal taboos and inhibitions imposed on her by the brute male domination manifested from the changing economic and domestic considerations. Women were reduced to the pits of servitude and the level of home-maker, sacrificing her comforts and conveniences for the welfare of the menfolk and the entire family.
