Kumaran Asan is one of the great Trio of modern Malayalam poetry, the other two being Vallathol Narayana Menon and Ulloor Parameswara Iyer. We see a unique blend of East and West in Asan's philosophy of life and his approach.to problems Asan was not only a great poet but a great organizer as well. As a true disciple of Sri Narayana Guru, and as a zealous member of the backward community of Ezhavas, he organized the SNDP Yogam and was its general secretary for 17 years. It was Asan's great task to break the inertia of the depressed classes, to create a healthy discontent among them, and to whip up a passion for enlightenment and equality and an impatience for change. When he warns the orthodox leaders of society, 'Change you the laws yourselves or else, the laws will change you indeed', we hear the trumpet of a prophecy.
Asan sowed the seeds of revolution both in the literary and the social fields. The past four decades have shown how right he was.
At the height of his creative power, Asan met with a watery grave. He was only 51 then.
