Book Description

Foreword The Government of India, Ministry of Health & Family Welfare established the Central Council for Research in Unani Medicine with a prime objective to develop Research on Scientific lines in Unani System of Medicine. The Council identified Clinical Research, Drug Research, Literary Research, Survey Collection and Cultivation of Medicinal Plants and Family Welfare Research Programme of areas of activities. Whereas much importance was given and significant strides have been made by this Council in the field of Clinical Research, the importance attached to Literary i.e. Medico Historical Research was not less important. The Unani System of Medicine has rich treasures of knowledge in Persian and Arabic languages. There was, therefore, a need to transform its old and classical literature into modern Indian languages for use of the posterity. The Council, however, embarked upon a Project to edit and translate rare manuscripts from Persian/Arabic languages to Urdu and other languages. Under this programme, the council has so far published some important works such as Kitab al- Abdal (Arabic text, Urdu translation and explanatory notes) by Zakariya Razi (Rhazes) on substitutes for single drugs; Kitab al-Kulliyat (edited Arabic text and Urdu translation separate volumes) on fundamentals of Unani Medicines; Risala Judia (Persian text, Urdu translation and explana- tory notes) by Ibn Sina (Avicenna), Aina-e-Sarguzisht (Urdu translation, a biography of Avicenna), Kitab al-Mansoori (Urdu translation) by Zakariya Razi, Kitab at-Taisir (Urdu translation) by Ibn Zohr, Kitab al-Jame li Mufradat al adwiyahwal aghziyah (Vol.I & II, Urdu translation) by Ibn Baitar, on single drugs; and Uyoon al-Anba fi Tabaqat al-Atibba (Vol.I & II, Urdu translation) by Ibn Abi Usaiba.
