About the Book The experiences and knowledge from our past are recorded in manuscripts which have been handed down to us over several thousand years. The Government of India through the Department of Culture took note of the importance of vast tangible heritage of India and established the National Mission for Manuscripts with the purpose of locating, documenting, preserving and disseminating the knowledge content of India's manuscripts. In order to disseminate the knowledge content of manuscripts, the Mission has taken up several programmers such as lectures, seminars, publication of unpublished manuscripts, Manuscript logy and Paleography Workshop etc.

The Krtibodha (Knowledge of Texts) Series is one of such publication project of National Mission for Manuscripts to promote academic interest and scholarship in the area of manuscript studies.

The transcribed and critically edited manuscripts prepared either in the Advance Level Manuscript logy Workshops of the Mission or in the Gurukula scheme are published under the Krtibodha series.

The present text is one of such Gurukula scheme projects critically edited by Dharmendra Kumar Bhatt under the Guru, Prof. Vasant Kumar Bhatt.

About the Author Dharmendra Kumar Bhatt is a post graduate student of Panini's grammar and a scholar at the department of Sanskrit, School of Languages, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad. At present he is persuing his Ph. D., working on the Kumudacandrika commentary on the Meghadüta. He was selected under the Gurukula Scheme of NMM, (2006-2008) to transliterate old scripts. The mission has entrusted him with the transliteration of Sharada manuscripts of Jonaraja's commentary on the Kirätärjuniya into Devanagari script. Along with the transliteration work, he was also asked to critically edit the first three cantos of this commentary. He is trained to decipher old scripts like Sharada of Kashmir and the Grantha script of South India by Prof. T. N. Ganjoo of Shrinagar and Dr. S. Jagannath of Mysore respectively at the Advance Level Workshop on Manuscript logy (2005), organized by the National Mission for Manuscripts, at New Delhi. Now-a-days there are very few scholars who can decipher old Sharada and Grantha scripts into Devanagari. He is an asset to the Gujarat University for this kind of work.

Prof. Vasantkumar M. Bhatt, HoD, Department of Sanskrit, Gujarat University, Ahmedabad supervised the whole transliteration work and taught him the principles of Critical Text-Editing.
