Kerala Varma (1845-1914), known all over Kerala as Valiya Koyil Tampuran, hailed as Sahityachakravarti and Kerala Kalidasa, symbolises renaissance in Kerala. An eminent poet in Malayalam and Sanskrit, he was a pioneer in Malayalam prose, fiction, biography and literary criticism.
Mahakavi Kumaran Asan said: "We do not think that in Kerala there is any great man other than Kerala Varma whom all Malayalees, love, respect and remember with gratitude. When will it be possible for us to see again a combination like this of qualities such as scholarship, poetic talent, goodness, generosity, and character of the highest standard"-a rare tribute from one great man to another.
P.K. Narayana Pillai (b. 1910), recipient of a number of literary awards including the Kerala Varma Gold Medal, the Kalidasa Award and the Sahitya Akademi Award, has numerous publications in Malayalam, Sanskrit and English to his credit.
