The present work is the result of my Lectures delivered to my students during the last twenty years on Kautilya and other aspects of ancient Indian polity. The book is intended not primarily for specialists but for the students of Indian political theories and ideas who wish to know more about Kautilya. As the book is written in a popular style no diacritical mark has been used. Footnotes have been avoided but indications about the original sources, wherever necessary, have been given in the body of the text within brackets. I am fully conscious of the limitations inherent in a work of this kind and I crave the indulgence of my readers for my lapses, whatever they are in the book. The final responsibility for what is written is mine so for as the defects of the book are concerned. My thanks are due to Dr. Arun Kumar Sinha, my erstwhile colleague , and now Lecturer in the Department of Ancient Indian and Asian Studies, Magadh University (Gaya), who prepared the press copy of the manuscript and also to Chowkhamba Sanskrit Series, Varanasi, for taking interest in its publication.
