The erstwhile district of Kanyakumari placed in the historical sketch of Tamilnadu with its glory of the past and prime importance. The southern end of this region was ruled over by the Pandyas of the Sangam Age and Early Pandyas, before 10 Century AD. In 11-12 Cy.A.D. it was ruled over by the Cholas. Then, the Later Pandyas, the Venad rulars and the Travancore Kings took over the charge of this region.
The inscriptions found in the dist. belong to different periods of different dynasties. The then Travancore Govt, was the pioneer in publishing the inscriptions of this region through "Travancore Archaeological Series'. Afterwards, the State Dept. of Archaeology Govt. of Tamilnadu took initiative of copying the inscriptions in the dist. in Agastees waram, Kalkulam and Tovalai talukas and published the same through "Kanyakumari Kalvettukal in five volumes.
This volume includes the unpublished inscriptions so far in the dist., inscriptions in Vilavancode Taluk and also the inscriptions in Padmanabhapuram Palace Museum. These inscriptions were copied during the epigraphical intensive campaign conducted in between 2004-2005 by this dept. The inscriptions reveal the political, social, economical and cultural history and also the territorial divisions existed in those days in Kanyakumari dist.
