Book Description
About the Book

In this art of universal manifestations we can hear the gentle murmurs of mild winds changing into the lover's intoxicated voice and also meet the goddess of knowledge Saraswati playing her Vina. Dancing moonlight aura over the silvery mountains crowned with the moon is not different from the vibrant Primal Being. Art, here, represents all sight of the spectacle of Nature's love kindling our soul and giving our eyes a divine gleam with a blissful glow. The reliance on God as inspiration behind universe had an impact on Pahari art that was acquired from the essence of poetry, classical tradition and ritualistic approach to life where young lovers were deities and incarnations of gods. Love had become light to keep the flame aglow in distant hills. Message of love echoed in hills in tempestuous storms and thunder over the serene lushgreen valleys and lofty mountains. In Kangra Miniatures the concept of Shiva and Shakti, Radha and Krishna, the masculine and the feminine played an important role where the exotic as well as spiritual significance finds solutions. These paintings represent a very special niche in the glittering spectrums of miniature paintings Pahari artists are creative masters and they created subtle web of philosophical environment to give mystic touch to each of their creations. Imagery of poetry, its situational allusions, similies, metaphors, all got drenched in colours of desire on brushes within the representational framework which the artists lived with and each fragment of vocal and written word has become vision. Art here is mystery of poetic philosophy. These works are superb and unique because of the fresh use of symbols and illusions which leave the texts far behind in providing us intimations of special and higher interpretations, meaning and translations and bring us ourselves on the graph of paper in form of living characters as a part of picture. Pahari art of Kangra region has interesting innovations, skilful improvisation and delicacy of touches of brush. Unfailing charms of the allusions, symbols and suggestiveness speak of ferverish moment of creativity. Kangra art is art for common man giving at one time feeling of mysterious awe and spiritual joy.

Pahari art is great art because it inspires humanity. This art is related to an ideological movement; stylistic, profundly religious and spiritual, well adopted to the hill-region ethos which is characteristic spirit of humanity. Pahari painting has achieved its ultimate aim in its practical purpose. It moves us, elates us, and gives us an emotional satisfaction. Pahari art is not merely 'frozen music' or the 'silent music'. It is lyrical, rhythmical, soothing, comforting, elevating, pleasing to the mind. The subtle flow of pure intensive melody of this art appears in harmonies producing an effect of light and an atmosphere where by the unique perfection of rhythm of the colour, music transforms into a subtle, pure intensive melody.
