Kalatattvakosa series of the Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts has endeavoured to evolve an important modern device to grasp the essential thought and knowledge system of the Indian artistic and cultural tradition. Through an in-depth investigation into the primary sources of various Indological disciplines, the series aims at facilitating the reader to comprehend the interdisciplinary approach of Indological and art-historical research. The present volume: Sthana-Ayatana (Substratum/ Abode) is the seventh manifestation of the series devoted to core concepts of Indian art. It contains seven articles and starts its journey from the general notion of substratum sthana' and reaches up to the particular location of `ayatana'. A _cluster of six more related terms viz. tirtha, kunda, skambha/stambha, kona/asra/ vrtta, citi/caitya/stupa and sannivesa/lsamsthana are dealt herein.
Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan has provided the con-ceptual framework to the entire Kalatattvakosa series. Prof. K.D. Tripathi, Dr. Sukumar Chattopadhyay and Dr. Pranati Ghosal edited this Volume. In addition to the editors, other contributors are: Yugal Kishot Mishra, Bhavani Prasad Bhattacharya, Parvati Banerjee, Ramnath Mishra and Radhavallabh Tripathi.
