The Bhagavadgita is the bestower of the nectar of Wisdom. It is an epitome of the essentials of Vedic teaching. On the magic carpet of its words are exhibited the highest values of life and the eternal conceptions of religion. Gita extricates the heart of man from the grip of scepticism, fills it with the elixir of hope and leads it to the realization of sublime aspirations.
The different currents of thought which flow through the Sankhya dualism, the Uttaramimamsa teaching of the transcen dent Brahman, the Bhagavata theism, the Yoga of contemplation, the Vedic cult extent in orthodox sections of society and the diverse and apparently antithetical forms of religious conscious ness are deftly integrated in the Gita into a comprehensive synthesis. Being at once a Yogasastra and Brahma Vidya, it has inspired the minds of savants with the profundity of its wisdom.Sankara and Anandagiri, Sridhara and Madhusudana, Yamunacharya and Ramanuja, Madhva and Nimbarka, Vallabha and Tilak wrote commentaries on Gita before and after Jnaneswara in the light of their calibre and comprehension. Their interpretations and reflec tions are necessarily coloured by the beliefs they cherished in the various traditional schools of Indian philosophy and Hindu theology. Since ethical and metaphysical concepts are inter woven into the many-threaded tapestry of this magnificent scripture, it helps the leaders of the world in solving the knotty problems of today.
Jnaneswara is one of the great spiritual leaders of India who contributed significant thought to our religious literature and led men in the path of Sadhana. Even as a boy, he evinced like Sankara, Superhuman intellectual and spiritual powers. He was brought up in the lap of hardship. His elder brother Nivrittinath was his Guru whom he revered at all times. Though Jnaneswara moved on earth, he gained citizenship in the kingdom of God. By virtue of his powers of contemplation and imagination, volition and vision, he attained the most distinguished position among the poet- 'philosophers and spiritual leaders of the world. Abstruse metaphysics has been metamorphosed into mellifluous poetry by the magic touch of his marvellous genius. Abstract thoughts and hard concepts are clothed by him in brilliant aesthetic habiliments. Apt similes, colourful images, lively pictures emanate spontaneously from the mind of this great savant. Powers of philosophical interpretation, religious exposition and poetic expression are in evidence in this momentous book. Philosophy perspires readers if it is void of aesthetic wealth and poetry becomes sheer sentimentalism if it does not scintillate sparks of sublime philosophic ideology. Suffering and self-realisation, experience and vision render creative art profoundly sacred and perennially divine. In spiring ideology cannot be clothed in insipid phraseology.
