Book Description
Introduction

In general, Indian Philosophy is accepted somehow different from Western Philosophy and it is highly a point of debate that what differences are really between both traditions. Some philosophers would point out that in both traditions there are a lot of differences and on the other hand some may argue that there is no difference at all. It seems to me that both these views are rather extremist views and the truth is anywhere between both notions. This is an extremist view that there is no difference at all and this is also an exaggerated view that there are such differences that we cannot describe both by the same word. I would argue that there must be differences, how can be there no difference if there is a lot of difference in every culture. This is a very narrow thought that there is only one philosophy that is Western as was argued by some philosophers. On the other hand this view is also a narrow type of thinking that only Bhartiya Darshanas are Darshanas as accepted by Indian Traditional scholars. I would like to point out here that in every culture and civilization there has to be a tradition of thinking which forms philosophy. It is another thing that in some cultures it is found in a developed form and in others not in so developed form. It is not possible that there is only one philosophy that is Western or Indian. The same case can be applied to religion too. Every culture and civilization must possess a tradition of thinking, arguing and way of living. Thinking is a very basic human activity, without it there were no much difference between man and animals. Therefore, the people who claim that there is only one philosophy, other philosophies are not philosophies but religions, are driven from a model of philosophy and not seeing the same model in other systems of thought try to refuse other philosophies. I would like to say that this is not the proper way to deal with this question. This thinking is highly questionable that there is only one philosophy, and other are only religions; for only that other systems of thought could not draw and maintain much distance from religion as Western Philosophy did.
